Closet Overhaul

Here it is, my giant pile of clothes. It is probably a sin to have this many clothes. It's been a while since I've sorted through them, and since we will be moving halfway around the world in just a few months I needed to take stock of what I have. We plan on only taking four suitcases total. We may take another if we need to, but we would have to pay extra. My goal over the next couple months is to build a minimal wardrobe, and shop for a few new things to replace what I need that is worn out.

It took me a couple days to sort through it all because everything had to be tried on and evaluated.  I took out all the maternity clothes, and anything too big, too small, or worn out.

Isn't he a cutie?

Here's what I ended up with. Apparently I really like blue. So I decided to work with that for now. All of these can be mixed and matched and accessorized for a ton of variety. I'm traveling with just these for the next month. I'll see how it works and modify as needed.

Capsule Wardrobe Model:
9 Shirts
4 Skirts
3 Sweaters
2 Jackets
Total = 18 pieces

  1. I so need to do this with my clothes! How did the 18 pieces work out for you in the long run? And then what about shoes? I always hate having to pack shoes when I go somewhere.

  2. Thanks for commenting! I need to do a follow up post for this but I'll tell you now, I loved it! It was so un-stressful to not have so many options. I could just get up in the morning and throw on any skirt with any shirt and be good to go. The only drawback was having to do laundry often, which is not a problem if you have a washer. Also, things wear out faster, but that's ok too because you get tired of them faster when you're wearing them so much. It's also easier to go shopping when I just have one shirt that needs replaced so I know exactly what I want.
    I ended up taking more clothes to China with me. A whole suitcase actually! But I was packing for a year, maybe two. So I had to pack for all seasons, including a winter coat and hiking boots.
    Shoes. I don't like having to take up room packing them either. I think at the time of this post I had three pair with me, a dressy shoe, sandals and walking shoes. The bare minimum. But to quote one of my favorite movies, Ever After, "No, one will be looking at your feet."
